CCTV vs a Complete Home Security System: What's the Difference?

Recording an intruder isn't the same as stopping one. The difference is the second layer.

CCTV records what happens

A CCTV system is a record of events. Cameras capture the exterior (and sometimes interior) of your home, store the footage, and let you view it live or after the fact. That's genuinely useful — for evidence, for checking on the property remotely, and for seeing who's at the door.

What CCTV alone doesn't do is respond. If someone enters your home at 2am, the cameras record it, but nothing in the system is designed to deter them in the moment or tell you it's happening.

A complete system is designed to respond

A complete home security system adds an active layer: internal detection that senses someone inside, an internal siren that sounds the moment an entry is breached, and alerts that reach your phone. The exterior cameras still record, but the inside of the home is no longer passive.

The two layers are designed to work together — cameras on the outside, detection and response on the inside.

Where CCTV alone falls short

The most common gap we see is a home with good exterior cameras and nothing inside. If someone gets past the exterior — through an unlocked door, a broken window, or simply during the day — the cameras record them leaving, but nothing deterred them or alerted the homeowner in real time.

That gap is exactly what internal detection is built to close.

Which is right for you

If your priority is seeing and recording the outside of your property, CCTV may be enough. If you want a system that also responds when someone enters, a complete system combining CCTV with internal detection is the better fit.

Most of the homes we install across the Gold Coast and Brisbane land on the second option, because the marginal cost of the internal layer is small relative to the protection it adds.
